GREER TO DE BUT GROUP A SIERRA IN KILLARNEY

-

Irish Tarmac Rally Championship frontrunner Jonny Greer will debut a Group A-spec Ford Sierra built by DGM Sport on the Killarney Historic Rally next month.

Greer’s father Davy founded David Greer Motorsport, and drove multiple variants of Sierras during the early 1990s. He only did a handful of events in a four-door car, which is what the squad has built.

The car is a homage to an Alex Fiorio Q8-liveried machine, and will carry the cream and blue colours made famous by Francois Delecour and his final stage retirement while leading the Monte Carlo Rally in 1991.

“The car has been in the pipeline for a while, we got a rolling bodyshell a couple of years ago and it’s starting to take shape,” said Jonny Greer. “The Killarney event was looking like a good rally and a great weekend, and it gave us a target to build the car to. It’s coming together nicely.

“It’s Group A-spec, we’re trying to rebuild the car as close to the original as we can, but the parts aren’t always easy to come by.

“I was young when the Sierra was competing, I remember the car in the workshop but nothing about them mechanically. It’s interesting to see underneath the cars from back then.

“It won’t be a tool to compete with the guys in the Mk2s as they are far more developed than they were back in the day.”

The Killarney event attracts strong entries in the modified and historic sections, predictably dominated by Ford Escort Mk2s. Rob Duggan was the top modern and Denis Moynihan top historic in 2017.
