CHEVRON F3 CAR BACK IN THE UK

One-litre car goes on sale

A well-known 1970 Chevron B17 one-litre Formula 3 car is back in the UK after spending more than 45 years in North America.

Chassis number F3-70-8 was originally supplied to Ken Sedgley, who raced it in British F3 in 1970 and part of 1971 before selling it to Fred Opert in the US. Five years ago it was rebuilt by former F3 racer John Bright who has now shipped it back to England ready for sale via Alan Cornock.

When it went to the US the car was converted to Formula B specification and later went to South Carolina. After a long period in storage, it was bought 20 years ago by Lee Chapman as a rolling chassis. At some point, a Mazda engine had been installed for the car to be used in a type of autocross event around car parks.

“Lee and John Bright were looking at building two Formula B cars to race but decided that the original chassis of F3-70-8 was too badly damaged to be used,” said Cornock. “So they had a new frame made by Dean Hutchinson in the USA. We still have the original chassis with the Chevron chassis number, which will be supplied with the rebuilt car to prove its provenance.”

Bright raced the car in FB trim in North America in late 2014. Cornock added: “John has restored the car to showroom condition, as he always does, and it is now available less engine but with a rebuilt Hewland Mk8 gearbox.”
