Fisher seals third Combe Formula Ford title
Josh Fisher became the first triple Castle Combe Formula Ford 1600 champion since Kevin Mills in 1997 by wrapping up the 2019 title with one round to spare on bank holiday Monday.
The Bridgwater driver, champion in 2008 and 2017, needs only to avoid exclusion from the final round later this month to defeat Luke Cooper, who could still finish level on points but has an inferior win count.
Cooper kept his hopes of retaining his title alive by claiming a double pole position and victory in the first of Monday’s races, overcoming Fisher after a poor start by taking the lead at Quarry half-way through the race. In the second race, though, Fisher prevailed by 0.149 seconds and effectively sealed the title when brother Felix took the fastest lap bonus on the penultimate lap.
“I was frustrated after the first race as I was a bit soft, and that doesn’t do you any good in Formula Ford,” said Josh. “I went hard again in the second race and it paid off.”
Jamie Sturges claimed the Castle Combe GT championship by taking his sixth and seventh wins from eight rounds in Class D at the wheel of his VW Golf TCR. The challenge from Kevin
Jones ended when his
Noble was twice beaten to outright victory by Lucky Khera’s Mclaren, while Oliver Bull’s Vauxhall Tigra suffered electrical issues.
The outcome of the Combe Saloon championship will be resolved at the season finale after Class C leader Matt Parr took two more class wins in his Peugeot 106 to narrow the gap to double champion Simon Thorntonnorris, whose Class B Mitsubishi Colt could only limp home in race two. Gary Prebble took both overall victories in his SEAT Leon.
