‘GT5 champions eye GT4 move’

Mckenna and Albutt are both in talks to race GT4 machinery next season

Newly-crowned Ginetta GT5 Challenge champions Scott Mckenna and Dale Albutt have their sights set on a British GT drive next season.

Mckenna, 18, took the overall title at the final round at Donington Park earlier this month with second place in the opening race.

It was his first full season in car racing having done a parttime GT5 campaign in 2018.

He now intends to race GT4 machinery next season having tested with several teams.

“British GT4, that’s the plan,” he said. “That’s what we’re looking to do and hopefully that’s where you will see me next year. It’s quite a jump but we think it’s the best series to go to to aid my career.

“I’m not saying I’m going to smash it from the first round and be on top of it, it will very much be a learning experience, but that’s not to say we’re not going to try and win races.”

Albutt, whose consistency enabled him to seal the Am class title at Donington, is also eyeing a move to GT4 – in either British GT or the Ginetta GT4 Supercup – and has had held talks with teams.

“As an amateur driver in only my second year of racing, it was a bit unexpected in a way and you don’t expect to have contact from major team bosses saying ‘do you fancy coming along for British GT or GT4 Supercup with us next year?’” he said.

“A good friend of mine, Graham Davidson, has just won British GT and I would love to go to British GT. If I had the right offer [he would race in that] and I’m in talks with a couple of people.” Additional reporting by Stephen Lickorish
