He prepares race cars

“I look after several cars in different categories with the Historic Sports Car Club and the Vintage Sportscar Club, and the gaps between race meetings are getting less.

I see a lot of the M5, but we’ve got 80 miles to do on the A30 before we even join the M5. It’s a long way from any race circuits but that’s a small price to pay for the quality of life we have. I’m a proud Cornishman and it is unlikely I’d ever live anywhere else.”

He’s done some racing

“My dad raced when I was younger and I raced as soon as I was able. So I was born with a spanner in my hand and never wanted to do anything different. I raced national stock rods, lightning rods and hot rods. I started in the south-west and qualified for the national championship in 1989 when I was 19 and raced away in the Midlands for six years.”

He got involved in TVRS

“I ended up being the regional organiser for the local TVR club and Steve Bellerby bought a Chimera, so that’s how I knew Steve. He’d done some rallying previously and he’d always wanted to go racing, so it didn’t take long before we were building a car for 70s Road Sports. We looked at what to run a TVR in and we saw a feature on Julian Barter who was winning the championship at the time in his 3000M. So that was decision made.”

He now has a business

“In my spare time the business, Peninsula Historic Motorsport, has grown and grown. I look after several cars in 70s Road Sports but I’ve probably worked on every car in the paddock at some point. If anyone has a problem, we’ll get stuck in and try and help. There are plenty of Lotuses in the championship and they are never short of problems!”

He enjoys 70s Road Sports

“We’ve made some wonderful friends here and it is very much a big family or a travelling circus. It is proper club motorsport but it is competitive at the front and people are keen to do as well as they can. At the end of the 2017 season we jointly won the spirit of the championship award and it was really nice to be acknowledged.”
