British Historic Rally Championship winner Age:61 Lives: Norwich
He’s won the British Historic Rally Championship
“I’m so pleased that we’ve done it.
It’s amazing! It’s an absolute relief and we’ve had to fight all the way. But we’ve had our fair share of luck this year. The rear axle that came off that car in Ireland – oh my goodness, it was literally bending in two.”
They had some lucky moments
“We’ve had one or two off-road excursions and my co-driver Jez Rogers had shouted at me and we got away with it. So we’ve had a bit of luck on our side. But you need a bit of luck to win a championship.”
The camaraderie was important
“It’s all about the people lined up here at the finish of the Trackrod Rally, the final round; the camaraderie in the championship and the fun we get with all these guys is just incredible. They are some very fast drivers and we are very proud to beat them. Some of these guys have been non-stop rallying for the last 30 years. I came back to rallying in 2011.”
He has a great team
“I’ve had an amazing team behind me with Frank Richer and the guys. Massive thanks are due to Frank and his guys; it is so appreciated.
The enthusiasm they have for it – you don’t realise until you see the tears at the end of this rally. I feel very proud and humble that they put so much effort in and I really wanted to win it for the team.”
The co-driver was a key part
“The partnership with Jez Rogers is what has really brought us on this year. It doesn’t happen by accident. We spend a long time talking about the result and looking at our in-car and other people’s in-car. That’s where the speed has come from. I think when we are up and running we are now a match for the pace of people like Matthew Robinson and Nick Elliott.”
