STEVE PEREZ CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC OVER SON SEB’S BRC CHANCES
Steve Perez reckons his son
Seb “might be a better rally driver than race driver” as
Perez Jr prepares for his firstever British Rally Championship assault in 2021.
Perez Jr, a former Ginetta and Porsche Carerra Cup GB racer, was meant to race for R-Motorsport in European GT4 this year before the team pulled out. However, he isn’t new to rallying as he competed in the Junior 1000 series, has won several historic events and even drove the M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally2 he will campaign this year on the 2019 Grizedale Stages, finishing fourth overall.
Perez Sr, the 2014 BTRDA Gold Star champion, told MN: “I was chatting to Malcolm Wilson over a bit of dinner and at some stage we thought he [Seb] might be a better rally driver than race driver. The car is being run by M-Sport and obviously I’ve got a long history running M-Sport Focuses and we’ll see how the first couple of rounds go.”
Asked how competitive his son could be, Perez Sr said: “It’s very difficult to tell. He’s done very well on historic Tarmac rallies but he’s up against a lot of competition this year, it’s probably one of the best entries I’ve seen for years in BRC so it’s incredibly competitive. And I think it’s very much a learning year and we might even try and pop in the odd World championship round if possible. I’d like to see how he gets on somewhere like Catalunya because, on Spanish Tarmac, he’s really impressed me.”
Perez will contest the Historic Masters Festival at Brands Hatch the day before the opening round of the BRC at Oulton Park.
