SALTON BEATS HIS OLD CHASSIS TO CLAIM THE WEEKEND’S SILVERWARE ON BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY
Salton won the Raymond Baxter Sporting Trial on Bank Holiday Monday with a near perfect day.
He dropped just a single point on his way to collecting the Hepplewaite Trophy for aggregate scores over the two days of events in Cumbria.
Darren Underwood was Salton’s nearest challenger, dropping the same point on the first round, but soon fell back. That allowed Andrew Woodhead to finish as closest challenger, in Salton’s old car.
He beat reigning Gold Star champion Bryan Walker on a tie-break on eight points. The previous day’s winner, Thomas Bricknell, could only manage fourth overall as he had slowly let odd points slip away.
Irish driver David Webster finished in fifth, ahead of Richard Sharp who had a better day in sixth beating fellow Cartwright driver Bill Rhodes.
Relative newcomer John Firth won the intermediate live-axle class, beating Bob Packham to eighth overall on a tiebreak in his similar vintage Kincraft. George Watson completed the top 10 as the event finished early due to rain.
Underwood won the intermediate independent class and Ian BleaseDudley the rookie class.
