BALFE JOINS BARWELL AND MITCHELL FOR BRITISH GT TITLE ASSAULT

All-star line-up set for a British GT frontrunning GT3 championship tilt in 2023

Established frontrunning Am racer Shaun Balfe will join champion Sandy Mitchell at standard-bearing Barwell Motorsport for a 2023 British GT title charge in the new Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2.

Balfe, who is British GT’s longest-serving driver and usually races with his family run team, has twice come close to British GT’s crown, first in 2003 driving a Mosler and then in 2019 when in a McLaren he came just five points shy of the title despite missing the season-opening Oulton Park double header. Balfe looked a title favourite for 2020 but withdrew on the season’s eve amid Covid disruption. He also has won the Spanish GT championship and a GT Open class title.

Last year, alongside Adam Carroll in an Audi, Balfe looked set to again fight for the championship but withdrew midseason, unhappy with the car’s Balance of Performance rating.

Balfe now pairing with British GT star

Pro driver Mitchell at the habitual titlewinning Barwell team looks one of 2023’s strongest combinations. Mitchell, 22, finished runner-up in 2022’s standings, driving alongside Adam Balon, having won 2020’s title with Rob Collard.

Balfe and Mitchell complete Barwell’s two-car British GT3 programme, alongside already announced Mark Sansom and

Will Tregurtha.

Balfe said: “Having competed against Barwell for several years, I’d always seen them as the ones to watch, the team that consistently delivers results. I’m clearly very excited and motivated to help keep Barwell in the top tier of BGT.”

Mitchell added: “I feel we have an extremely strong package which is ready to challenge for the title.”
