BLACK TO ATTEMPT TWIN BRC AND ASPHALT CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR

Ford Fiesta Rally2 driver aims for a ‘greedy’ triple attack for 2023 season

Callum Black will start campaigns in both the British and Asphalt Rally Championships and also has a BTRDA Gold Star bid under consideration.

Black will miss Sunday’s ARC opener, the East Riding Stages, but will start both the Manx and Jim Clark events in May, while his season begins with next month’s Malcolm Wilson Rally, which is a round of both the BRC and BTRDA.

However Black is unsure whether he’ll score BTRDA points in Cumbria with his Ford Fiesta Rally2 as to do so would prevent him doing the recce for BRC contenders.

His father Steve used the car on the Riponian Stages and may use it again on BTRDA events later in the year.

Black explained: “I need to make a decision because if dad is going to do a few BTRDA rallies there’s not much point in me not doing a recce for the Malcolm Wilson if I’m not going to be able to win BTRDA. But the plan is to try and be greedy and do as many championships as I can. We’ll probably prioritise once we see how the Malcolm Wilson and Jim Clark Rallies go.

“I haven’t done a proper asphalt rally since 2014 so there is an itch to scratch there,” he added. “I’m desperate to do some four-wheel-drive asphalt driving but at the same time if I can get a couple of tidy results, depending on who else does the BRC, that’s something I would persevere with as it would be amazing to be British champion.”

Black last contested the BRC in 2014 behind the wheel of a Citroen DS3 R3T.

Black Senior, 62, said driving the Fiesta in Yorkshire was a tremendous experience. He told MN: “Callum reluctantly lent it to me for the day! Having seen the rear bumper he’s probably not going to be too happy with me. But we’ve had a brilliant day. It’s the first time I’ve ever been in one of these. I’ll certainly do another rally in it for sure. I’ve never done fourwheel drive before.”
