JONES CLAIMS SECOND BORDER 100 VICTORY

- Ian Mills

There was a rally-long two-way battle for the lead on the Border 100 with Iwan Jones/Andrew Lowe finally taking the top prize from Duncan Williams/Cadog Davies.

A third crew was involved for the first part of the event; Glyn Price/Dylan Jenkins led after the long opening section. They eventually fell back to a somewhat distant third place at the finish.

Williams/Davies then moved to the front and led for the remainder of the first half, as Jones/Lowe struggled with a misfire. At petrol Jones located the source of the problem, a cracked rotor arm, and, with a replacement fitted, he took the lead soon after the restart and came home for victory.

Williams/Davies were awarded the Les Roberts Memorial Shield for the best performance by a non-local crew, the event being run in Roberts’ memory.

Dan Morris/Kieran Price finished sixth; they would have been higher but for three minutes lost with an electrical problem early on.

A number of top crews had short rallies, all going out on the first section. These included Robi Wood and Daniel Jones, whose Escort suffered an engine failure three miles in. A snapped earth lead added Guy Woodcock and Andy Pullan to the sorry list, while broken wipers, vital in the torrential downpours, stopped Darren

Moon and Gary Evans. Results
