Symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism):
The symptoms af fect all the systems of your body so you may have fatigue and tiredness, weight gain and/or fluid retention, aches and pains, feel cold all the time, constipation, and dr y skin and hair.
Psychological symptoms include depression, problems with memor y and concentration and a feeling of mental slowness.
Gynaecological symptoms include irregular periods, heavy periods, loss of libido and infer tility.
Less common symptoms include carpal tunnel syndrome, hoarse voice and loss of the outer third of the eyebrows.
Symptoms of overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism):
Feeling restless and fidgety, being irritable or emotional, nervous and “on edge”. Sleep may also be af fected.
Weight loss, increased appetite (and still having weight loss), increased thirst
Feeling hot all the time and sweating Tremor of the hands.
Palpitations.
Gynaecological symptoms – irregular periods which may also become light, infer tility can also occur.
Thinning hair.
Diarrhoea or needing to open your bowels more frequently than normal.
Eye problems.
