Campaigner­s care about their particular issue for various reasons. It might represent a moral principle or be driven by situations or events they have seen or read that have affected them, just like Akeela.

Campaigns resulting from distressin­g personal experience­s have helped to bring changes to procedures, and even the law. Many people are happy to support initiative­s intent on improving the world for our generation and those to follow.

Research your topic thoroughly; as Louise says, social media and Google are key tools for learning more and also establishi­ng what campaigns and support groups already exist. Campaign websites offer the option to click and

‘Get Involved’ in their subject of interest, sometimes asking for help on specific aspects but always welcoming people to their cause and suggesting different ways to provide support.

Jenny’s involvemen­t with Friends of the Earth is quite specific but the organisati­on campaigns on many other important environmen­tal topics. If your subject is not being covered at all, look at your skill base to see how best to deliver your message; Joyce had writing experience and had also worked in the health profession for many years, so a blog and her contacts book provided a platform from which to move forward.

How much time do you have to give your cause? What are you prepared to do – hand out leaflets? Join a demonstrat­ion? Talk to the media? Consider what will work best for you.
