Sue’s Guide To howto keep saving on car insurance

-

Car insurance may be going up but there are still ways to save. I’ve been chatting to the folks at Swinton Insurance who have come up with a few simple tricks to save you money.

How many of us buy a car before checking the cost of the insurance? The bigger and more powerful your car, the more expensive the premium so put a call in to your insurer to get an idea of cost before you do the deal.

Tinted windows, roof racks and leather upholstery can all bump up your premium as they count as “modifications” and your insurer will want to know about any changes you make – otherwise if you have a prang, they could refuse to pay out.

Keep your insurer in the loop if you move, change job, get married or divorced. Any changes to your policy can affect your premium, so better to tell them too much than not enough.

Check your mileage. Most of us probably guess when we get to that part of the insurance quote – but keeping an accurate record can save money as you could pay too much if you overestimate your annual mileage.

Here’s a great little tip I got from the AA, too – putting in say 6,990 miles a year instead of 7,000 can save money so don’t always “round up” your mileage.

Check where you park. If you have a garage or driveway, use it, as you’ll usually pay less than someone who keeps their car on the street.
