What You Need To Know About Smart Meters

-

Big Energy Saving Week starts on Monday so I thought it was time to take a look at the next step in the energy world with my one minute guide to smart meters.

Smart Meters are free to fit and mean waving goodbye to estimated bills. The “smart” part tells your gas and electricity supplier exactly how much energy you use, and having one is reckoned to save the average household around £26 a year.

They’ve a handy display so you can see how much energy you’re using and how much it’s costing you. So if you ever needed an incentive to encourage the family to switch off lights when they leave the room this could be it!

I’m always suggesting switching suppliers to find a better deal and having a smart meter won’t make any difference to this; you can still shop around and switch and save.

No one is forcing you into having a smart meter, although the bonus of accurate bills may be enough to sway most people. However, as time goes on if your current meter reaches the end of its life – they don’t last forever! – you may find your only option is to have a smart meter fitted.

As part of a national rollout, energy suppliers are getting in touch with their customers, so if you want one and haven’t been asked, speak to your energy supplier.
