Sue’s Guide To Getting Ski Savvy...

-

Lots of us will be taking to the slopes on skiing holidays at this time of year, and with February half term coming up, it’s a popular time for family ski trips.

However, according to Aviva insurance, it’s also the most dangerous time of year for accidents, with twice the number of winter sports claims during half term as there are in the rest of the season.

So here’s how to protect yourself and your family…

Most people don’t bother with winter sports cover on their travel policy, yet the average cost of a ski accident is £900. Check what’s included on your policy, especially if you’ve got an annual one, and if necessary add winter sports cover, which may cost less than £10. So for the price of a couple of drinks you’ll have peace of mind.

Pack your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) but remember this isn’t the same as a decent travel insurance policy and only covers you for the same level of state medical care as the locals in the country you’re in.

Protect yourself. One in five children don’t wear helmets on the ski slopes, yet this could void your travel insurance if you don’t comply with the policy terms and conditions.

Don’t make too many trips to the bar! Travel insurers don’t expect you to stay sober throughout your trip, but go easy on the mulled wine as most policies usually carry exclusions about being under the influence of alcohol and you don’t want to take a tumble after a drink!
