Last year, TV presenter Ben Fogle was one of 15 million adults who went on a camping and caravanning trip in Britain’s great outdoors.

“There’s nothing quite like holidaying in the wilderness,” says Ben, who is one of the celebrity guest speakers at The Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show 2017.

“Over the years I’ve enjoyed many forms of camping. I have vivid memories of touring Canada in a motorhome with my parents and sisters, and camping in our garden when I was about nine years old.

“Since then, I’ve camped almost everywhere in the world, including all over the British Isles.

“Whether you’re in a tent, a motorhome or a caravan, an outdoor holiday lets you spend time in beautiful landscapes, watching the moon rise, gazing at the stars and living alongside nature.”

Ben and his wife Marina are currently introducing their children, Ludo (7) and Iona (5), to the joys of camping.

“The kids love sleeping in a tent with Mummy, Daddy and our dog, Storm,” says Ben. “Being in the outdoors is a great way to get together as a family. We leave technology at home and play card games and charades, read books and toast marshmallows over the campfire.

“You can still have fun when it rains. We took the children on a camping holiday to Tanzania in the wet season as I was filming out there. It was the wettest, muddiest camping I’ve ever experienced but it was also very memorable.”

One of Ben’s most unusual camping trips was with Marina and involved pitching a tent on a homemade raft and sailing slowly down a river in Sweden.

“We had a wonderful time, even though the weather was

terrible and our raft sank!”

Ben reveals he’s planning a family camping trip to the Scottish island of Iona this year so his daughter can visit the place she’s named after.

“I’d love to tour the Cornish coastline with a caravan, stopping off along the way,” he says. “That’s the beauty of holidaying in a tent, caravan or motorhome – you can stay where the fancy takes you.” The Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show is at Birmingham’s NEC from February 21-26, 2017.
