I’ve been caught speeding. Can I avoid a fine with a speed awareness course? ✦ If you’re caught speeding you won’t automatically be offered such a course. It depends on how far over the speed limit you were, and different police forces may have different limits. If you’ve done one in the last three years, you won’t get the chance again. The standard penalty for speeding is a fixed penalty notice and three points on your licence. Doing a course may save you points – but the course fees can be around the same as the penalty.
