THE GRAND CANYON, USA

The Grand Canyon in Arizona is one of the best known and most visited canyons in the world. It was carved out by the Colorado River over about six million years, is 277 miles long, 18 miles across at its widest point, and over a mile deep. It’s home to a diverse array of wildlife, and there are tours, walking routes, and many places to stay.

PAMUKKALE, TURKEY

Pamukkale in Turkey is a World Heritage Site where travertine terraced pools, formed over millions of years, create a landscape that is both surreal and breathtaking. Petrified sculptures created by cascades from hot springs glisten in the sunshine and visitors can take a dip in the pools. It’s little wonder the spectacle attracts two million tourists every year. The crystalised white limestone and calcium carbonate formations have a snowy appearance, but the water is warm. The average temperature in July is 26.5ºC. Visitors are asked to remove footwear to prevent erosion and dirtying of the pristine pools.

“It’s like looking at snowy mountains yet you’re roasting hot – very beautiful and very odd!” says travel editor, Alison.

Above the terraced pools is the ancient Greek-Roman spa city of Hierapolis, now in ruins. You can swim among the city’s collapsed columns in the waters of the spa, at around 36ºC. The ruins of Hierapolis include an amphitheatre, a graveyard, and the Temple of Apollo. Visit the red spring and mud baths of Karahayit, on the northern edge of town. It’s also worth exploring nearby Kaklik caves – a subterranean version of Pamukkale on a smaller scale.
