A Grand Day Out
Take the trail round the local nature reserve of Aberlady Bay, setup in 1952, where every habitat of coastal and marsh land life can be seen– and heard.
Children have been coming here to play for many years – parents and grandparents can remember being brought to enjoy an east coast day at the seaside, and then bringing their own offspring to play among the rocks, search in the pools, build castles and swim in the sea. Delightful for a stroll, or a paddle with trousers rolled up!
ACTIVITY... GOLFERS’ PARADISE
Scattered along the East Lothian coast around North Berwick are some of the world’s most famous links golf courses, including Muirfield, where the tenth green can be seen from the dining room of the luxurious Greywalls Hotel. This the last word in luxury, with the restaurant overseen by the famous Albert Roux. In North Berwick, the East Links Golf Course is equally challenging, with local fish and chips from the harbour shops afterwards.
PEOPLE ... SIR WALTER SCOTT
The magnificent ruin of Tantallon Castle is the setting for many a tale of fact and fiction – the home the legendary Black Douglas, made famous in Walter Scott’s Marmion, the retelling of the infamous Battle of Flodden where the cream of Scottish armour was lost in one day. A tragedy of a place to witness where one of the bravest borderers began his perilous quest for power.
