IS THE MENOPAUSE STRESSING YOUR HAIR?

EXPERT TIPS

-

The menopause is a time of change in many ways, and women can find that their hair and scalp are affected, causing selfconsciousness, worry and a lack of confidence. Some women experience hair loss and thinning, some a lack of volume and a dry, brittle texture. The hair and scalp becomes oily, sometimes developing dandruff.

To tease out solutions to menopausal hair woes, we’ve asked the experts for tips. What is going on with menopausal hair and why does it affect women in this way?

Glenn Lyons, Clinical Director at the Philip Kingsley Trichological Clinic in London, explains that, “With a decrease in oestrogen levels, hair growth is significantly less supported, the most common symptom being a noticeable increase in hair shedding. Some women will also notice a change in the condition and manageability of the hair.”

Hair Expert Trichologist, Sally-Ann Tarver, explains that it isn’t only hair loss that can be the issue.

“The change in the balance of the male and female hormones can lead to the hair depreciating in volume and hair becomes finer and ‘less bulky’.” Sally-Ann suggests looking into products like Nanogen Thickening Hair Treatment Shampoo and Conditioner ( WWW.NANOGEN.CO.UK) ) with prices starting at £7.95 which help “swell” the hair strand, making it thicker and more voluminous.

The Philip Kingsley range also have their specially formulated Trichotherapy® Regime ( WWW.PHILIPKINGSLEY. CO.UK) developed for fine and thinning hair.

Eileen Durward, A.Vogel Herbal Remedies’ Menopause Expert, points out that it is important to minimise stress as this can be a contributory factor to hair loss and hair and scalp complaints. She suggests keeping up with exercise to reduce stress, improve sleep and increase blood circulation – all of which are good for the hair and scalp!
