Sue’s Guide To Save On Pets’ Holiday Homes

-

We spend more than £250 on average on housing each of our four-legged friends while we’re on holiday, according to Direct Line Pet Insurance.

Nobody wants to skimp on care for our poochies and kitties, but their holiday homes can prove costly.

We’ve taken our cats to the same cattery for years. It’s fantastic and I know they’re well cared for, but it’s not cheap. In fact one year, their week in the cattery actually cost more than our apartment in Cyprus!

So here’s how to save money and make sure your pets are safe.

Check opening times of catteries and kennels before booking a trip. Some close Sundays, bank holidays or have restricted opening hours, which means you can end up paying for extra days once you’re home.

Ask a friend to be on standby and collect your pets in case you’re delayed. Saves on extra boarding fees. And you can often get a reduction if you’ve got two cats who will share the same chalet.

Ask family or friends to house-sit. They may enjoy the break, and if you offer to have the fridge well stocked with a bottle of wine chilling, that may seal the deal!

If you have several pets, a pet-sitting agency can work out cheaper than kennels or catteries but means someone being in your house while you’re away. Find dog lovers who don’t have pets but are happy to walk yours through
