You might think I’m getting a bit ahead of myself talking about booking train tickets over Christmas and New Year, but the cheapest fares are often on offer around 12 weeks in advance. Here’s my guide on snapping up the cheapest… Shop around with sites like WWW.

REDSPOTTEDHANKY.COM or WWW.THETRAINLINE.COM Even buying tickets the day before can mean discounts with an “Advance” fare compared with the “on the day” rate.

Travel off peak for big savings and more seats, as “commuter” routes are more likely to be less busy at the weekends.

Do you live between two stations? Then check which offers the best price and route. I’ve got a choice of two stations in different directions and one takes five minutes longer by car but saves a couple of pounds every trip.

You might want to get a railcard. It can save around 30% on tickets and there are plenty of options including Senior, Family & Friends and Two Together. Check out

WWW.RAILCARD.CO.UK for details and offers. Check the “split ticketing” tool at WWW.

MONEYSAVINGEXPERT.COM. Instead of buying a ticket from A-B, if the train stops on the way, you can save money buying a ticket to and from that station – even if you stay in the same seat on the same train!

Travelling with friends? Then go GroupSave and 3-9 adults travelling together save a third on off peak tickets.

Best deals at a glance? Check the new tool from WWW.THETRAINLINE.COM in its handy app – pop in where you’re going and up pop the cheapest deals.
