My Body Odour Is Ruining My Life

- Helen Lederer Celebrity agony aunt gives you her heartfelt advice every week

Ismell – and it’s destroying my life! I always used intimate deodorants, from my teens up until I developed a skin sensitivity and my doctor advised me to stop. She says the odour I have is natural, but I am conscious of it all the time and it’s reached a stage where I shower 3 times a day and completely avoid socialising. My husband says I’m making a fuss about nothing, which really doesn’t help! Any ideas would be welcome as I can’t speak to anyone else about this.

Iam so glad that you feel able to bring up this issue. It is one that is affecting you adversely so it’s important to address it.

We all have a sense of smell that has several elements. I’m told that we smell with our noses and our tongues as well! We also smell with our brains – our brains interpret signals from elsewhere. This means that, sometimes, our brains can misinterpret the signals they receive.

If your husband, doctor and friends cannot detect anything amiss with how you smell, then just maybe it is your brain. Now there’s a thought!

Ask your husband and friends to be honest with you about whether they can smell anything wrong. If they cannot smell anything and they are being truthful, then it is within you only. You will surely be able to accept that?

Once you can accept that, then you can relax a bit. It might be better to restrict the washing as this removes essential oils from the skin. If you just use deodorant/per fume in normal quantities and try the suggestion above you may regain your confidence.

If you don’t feel ready, I do suggest asking your GP to suggest some counselling and talk the problem through another way. Good luck!

If your husband and friends don’t smell anything, the problem may lie with you
