Drama, Triumph & Medals The Winter Olympics
It’s all to play for in the 2018 Winter Olympics, with exciting new events and the biggest Team GB squad ever…
Our best and most talented athletes are now in Pyeongchang in South Korea and the competition is under way at the 23rd Winter Olympics.
As well as traditional categories like ice hockey, figure skating and ski jumping, this year there are a few new ones, including the excitingly named “snowboard big air”!
Great Britain has sent its largest ever Winter Olympic team this year and with a record 59 taking part, there are high hopes for the medal count. At Sochi 2014, Team GB brought home a very respectable four medals but UK Sport predict this year’s medal count could be at least five – even as high as 10.
One of our best hopes lies in the form of Team GB’s women’s curling team who earned a bronze medal in 2014. Led by Eve Muirhead, the team are setting their sights firmly on victory.
“I’d be very disappointed if we didn’t [make the] podium,” she said. “That’s what we’ve been working hard for, the last four years, to get a medal round our necks.”
Eve admits this year is going to be extra special – her brothers, Thomas and Glen, have been selected to compete, too.
“This one’s going to be a little bit extra special, having the chance to compete along with my two brothers. My mum is going out to support us as well – it’s going to be really cool.”
Fingers crossed Eve can emulate the success of her predecessor, Rhona Martin, who led her team to victory in the curling competition in Salt Lake City in 2002, bagging Team GB’s first winter gold in 18 years.
Let’s go for gold, Eve – we’ll all be cheering you on!
