Leaving the mainland behind in favour of an island hideout is a great way to get a complete break. You needn’t go far. Lundy, off the North Devon coast, is a rugged, unspoilt island free from cars and crowds with sensational views over the sea. Getting here is part of the fun, whether you take the 7-minute helicopter flight in winter or hop on the island’s ship – MS Oldenburg – which operates in summer. Spend your days walking and wildlife-watching, keeping a lookout for the puffins that nest on the cliffs. The Landmark Trust has 23 self-catering holiday properties here, but the lighthouse keepers’ quarters perched on the island’s highest point will lend a sense of storybook adventure to your trip. Old Light Lower is the ground floor flat with an enormous fireplace and sleeps four, while Old Light Upper, on the first floor, sleeps five. For availability and prices, visit WWW LA AR TRU T RG U
Some of England’s most sensational scenery can be found in Yorkshire, but if you’ve only explored its National Parks like the Dales and North York Moors, then take a trip to Calderdale and uncover some of the region’s hidden treasures. Oats Royd Mill holiday apartments at Luddenden Foot are great for a secret getaway as they’re housed in a vast former woollen mill – not your typical holiday accommodation at first glance. Inside, the one- and two-bedroom apartments are comfortable, roomy and offer marvellous views across the Calder Valley. Head to Halifax to explore the attractive Piece Hall which reopened last year, or take the family to Eureka! The National Children’s Museum. Close to the apartments you’ll find the characterful and creative little market town of Hebden Bridge, known for its independent shops and cafés, as well as the beautiful wooded valley of Hardcastle Crags – a must for walkers.
