I’ve worked at the same company for some time and have always got on with my colleagues. Recently a new woman joined our department and does nothing but cause trouble. She seems to have taken a dislike to just about everyone, but me especially. I’ve got to the stage where I barely even speak to anyone – to give her no ammunition to use against me – and it’s really starting to get me down.

Office politics are always going to be in the top 10 of everyone’s stress list. A new member of staff may create new tensions and a sensible newcomer will make sure their arrival will not upset the vibe, but this is not always the case.

I’m thinking, if this new employee is upsetting so many people, then there must be a reason. Is she so insecure that she needs to create waves to be noticed? Perhaps reassure her of her

value until she starts behaving in a less toxic manner. Or maybe she is just not right for your office and her personality clashes with the office ethos. Does everyone feel the same or is it mainly you? Do you know anything about her previous jobs or home circumstances?

So many unknowns! Why not ask her out for a drink after work? Try to get to know her in a different environment.

If she remains a negative influence, then all of you together must make that known to your manager or the Human Resources department. A skilled professional may be able to get to the bottom of any conflict and enable a smoother working environment for all. It must be a real burden to dread going to work, but try to resolve this before you rethink your own future.
