Getting To Know… Ruthie Henshall
The actor, singer and dancer is never happier than when she’s starring in Chicago…
◆ I have been starring in Chicago on and off for the last 20 years and I absolutely love it. This is my fifth time in the show and I love it because the per formance, music and choreography are brilliant. As a per former, it is your dream come true. ◆ I’ve starred in Chicago on both sides of the Atlantic. The Americans are much more vocal. They will stand and whoop whereas the British are more reserved. If I had to choose between America and Britain, I would say America because when you are giving 110 per cent and it comes back at you, it’s a total and utter joy. That said, there’s such a new excitement for Chicago in the UK, it’s amazing to do. ◆ My proudest career moment was playing Polly Baker in the CrazyForYou musical in 1993-4. It was the first time I got my own lead role that I had created. I will never forget the opening night for as long as I live. ◆ My youngest daughter, Dolly, would love to act when she is older. She doesn’t want to dance or

sing but just actact. My eldesteldest, Lily, is an artist. Put her on stage and she will hide behind the tallest person! ◆ I would love to do Strictly ComeDancing but unfortunately they feel I am too experienced! I don’t know one person who wouldn’t want to do it. It’s now such an iconic thing to do. ◆ Ruthie is playing Mama Morton until June 30. Chicago runs until October 6 at the Phoenix Theatre, London.
