She Shouts At Her Crying Baby

- Celebrity agony aunt Helen Lederer gives you her heartfelt advice every week

How do I help someone without being labelled an interfering, old busybody? I live in a nice block of flats and have been really upset by a young single mum who has moved in across the landing from me. I think she’s struggling to cope as her baby cries constantly and I’ve often heard her losing her temper and shouting at the child to shut up. The noise is driving me mad, too – but what can I do to help in a tactful way?

It is so hard being a single mum with a fractious baby. You get no break and the days and nights can seem bleak. That said, it is part of parenting. Might she might be feeling isolated and in need of an adult ear? You could assuage your fears about anything more sinister by inviting yourself over for a cup of tea.

The problem, as you say, is how to help without being labelled interfering. On the other hand, could you live with yourself if there was – God forbid –

anything more harmful taking place? You seem to have suspicions about the amount of anger expressed. Try to “bump into” her in the lift or corridor. Admire the baby and just be friendly. Ask where she is from, does her mum visit, ask about friends. Your instincts will be very helpful.

You then have the option of asking for further advice from a professional body. Social Services, the Citizens Advice Bureau or even your health centre are all equipped to advise and, if needs be, act.

If the situation turns out to be innocent, you might wish to get to know your neighbour over a coffee. Pop round to let her know about any local useful groups or contacts. It’s your call – but if the noise is getting to you, why not offer to babysit so that she can go shopping or get a break? Being a good neighbour is a wonderful thing. Good luck.

Be friendly, admire the baby, ask where she is from – your instincts will be very helpful
