The 46-year-old TV adventurer talks about fear and fatherhood as he embarks on his first-ever theatre tour

-

◆ I was a slightly lost lad. I left school with no real qualifications, went on the dole, didn’t travel. I was 19 on my first plane trip.

◆ My most romantic moment was proposing to my wife. We were on a Greek island called Simi and we walked to a beautiful bay. I set up a camera to take a picture and then videoed me going down on one knee. There were birds tweeting at the time and it felt like a per fect moment.

◆ I’ve feared for my life a lot. I’ve had people debating whether to kill me and had bullets whizzing past me. On my tour I’ll be talking about the extreme places I’ve been to and the extreme things I’ve done. I’ll be talking about the joy of travel and hopefully encouraging and inspiring other people who haven’t had great starts in life.

◆ Since becoming a dad I’ve become more careful. I really dote on my son and want to see him grow up. If I was stranded somewhere I feel I could swim a sea to get back to him.

◆ Sometimes I wish I was on one of those telly programmes where you get to discover five star hotels. Sadly, that’s not part of my remit! But instead I’m meeting people who will linger in my memory for the rest of my life. I’m seeing things and doing things that are real privileges.

AN AUDIENCE WITH SIMON REEVE WILL BE AT THEATRES AROUND THE UK FROM 17 SEPTEMBER 2018 – FOR DATES/TICKET INFORMATION WWW.SIMONREEVE.CO.UK
