Caravanning In Style in Shrewsbury
A weekend away is even better when staying in an Airstream in a five-star caravan site on the outskirts of beautiful Shrewsbury
If you like to talk, visit Shrewsbury! It’s packed with welcoming, friendly people who are always happy to give advice on the places to visit and all the things to do.
Just like York, Shrewsbury town centre is full of medieval buildings. However, unlike York, the historic streets are relatively tourist-free so you can wander peacefully along narrow vennels where halftimbered houses lean towards each other over the ancient cobbles below. Walk up the rickety Bear Steps to St Alkmund’s Square and its awe-inspiring 1100-year-old church and you’ll find a coffee house with an outside terrace which provide the perfect spot for people watching.
Only yards from St Alkmund’s Square is Butcher Row, a 15th century street with a good choice of eating places, independent shops and several enticing ‘proper’
pubs. Or visit the Old Vestry under St Alkmund’s Church, which is home to La Lanterna, where you can tuck into the very best of Italian hospitality and food at the end of your day in Shrewsbury.
Of course, there’s much more to do in Shrewsbury than talk and eat! There’s an excellent river cruise along the River Severn on board Sabrina, with the Captain’s commentary providing a brief but informative overview of the town’s history. On exploring the town further, discover terraces of grand Georgian houses, cottages tucked away at the end of mews and a Victorian toll bridge across the river ( a mere 1p for pedestrians!)
Then there’s the fascinating The Dingle, a stunning sunken, almost otherwordly, garden which was rescued and restored by Blue Peter’s Percy Thrower and is only a five-minute walk from the town centre. It’s well worth a visit!
