Getting To Know… Kate Humble
She may be a busy television presenter, but Kate Humble tells us why she makes time for a walk every day…
● I’ve written a book about walking because it has always been a part of my day. I get up, check and feed all the animals and let the chickens out, and then set off for a walk very early with my dogs and without my phone. It gives me space and it means I start my day in a Zen-like fashion rather than stressed. You allow your body to gently wake up and feel part of the world around you. ● Walking can be like therapy. Whenever I’m anxious or unhappy or if I have writers’ block, I automatically go for a walk and it works itself out. Once, I was very upset about a work situation and figured out the solution while walking, got home and wrote an email. Science supports me – research shows that walking can fire up the creative areas of your brain. ● One of my ambitions is to do a long-distance walk with my dogs. There’s one all the way through Norway and another down the west coast of France that sound amazing. ● I’ve presented loads of shows, from Springwatch to Animal Park, but people are always saying, “Oh, you’re the Countryfile presenter.” I was introduced to Prince Phillip as a Countryfile presenter when I presented the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. I’ve never appeared on Countryfile! I guess it’s because I’m outdoorsy and have my arm up the back end of a sheep sometimes.
