My Son And Family Are Moving Away

-

My son married an American girl and they settled just round the corner from me. However, now that they have had two small children, she has suddenly decided that she wants to go home and be closer to her own family. My son is so easy-going that he is just going along with her plans. He doesn’t seem to realise that I’m devastated at the thought of not seeing my grandchildren regularly. I just don’t know what to do.

This is a difficult problem and one that will crop up more and more as greater population mobility means that our children are more likely to marry someone from another country. Love is so important, and it’s wonder ful that your son has a lovely family.

It’s not uncommon for a young mother to want to be near her parents as she evolves with her young family, and that does entail a decision that only they can make. Your son sounds

an affable and adaptable sort of person (credit to you) happy to make the move – and this also means you will have to face a new phase in your life.

A few things spring to mind. Firstly, make the most of the now – moving takes time and at the moment the move is in the future – so make as much of that time as you can. Have fun and make some good memories. Secondly start saving for those trips abroad in the future! I’m sure you’ll be most welcome in their new home.

Finally, none of us can accurately predict the future and the move might even be temporary. The world is smaller in so many ways – Skype, face time, Facebook – you will find a way to stay close. It just takes a little imagination. But know that distance can never cut the ties you already have.

Moving takes time so make the most of it and create fun memories together
