GSOH Essential To Lifelong Compatibility

-

The Queen and Prince Philip have several interests in common and this compatibility has been a key ingredient for their enduring marriage.

In particular their shared sense of fun has evidently stood them in good stead, and the Queen specifically praised her husband’s “support and unique sense of humour” in her 2017 Christmas message.

Over the decades we’ve heard of many quips from them both that have undoubtedly helped to liven up the constant stream of engagements they attend during the course of their royal duties.

Photographic archives abound with snaps of them laughing together at something they have seen or heard during various presentations, per formances or parades but we often witness little moments of private mirth such as the Queen’s giggles in 2005 at Buckingham Palace as she walked past her husband dressed in full military uniform. We can only wonder what remark he’d uttered from under the depths of that bearskin!

At the opening ceremony of London 2012 we watched as “James Bond” arrived in a black cab at Buckingham Palace and, flanked by two corgis, strode purposefully to meet a rather familiar face. The unusual pairing then departed in a helicopter, flying east to the Olympic stadium where “the Queen” skydived into the stadium, before making her official entrance to the roar of the crowd, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. What a great “sport” she showed herself to be.

It was at another great sporting event that the Queen hilariously photobombed a selfie. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games two members of the Australian hockey team were tr ying to capture the moment their monarch walked past in the background and instead found Her Majesty beaming over their shoulder!

Their daughter-in-law the Countess of Wessex once observed, “They make each other laugh – which is, you know, half the battle, isn’t it?”
