Connect with the natural world, and embrace the latest design trend by bringing the outside into your home

Biophilia is a word being used often in interior design and it refers to our human instinct and desire to interact with nature,” says Catharina Björkman, lifestyle expert for Swedish wood-burning stove brand Contura.

“We are seeing this translate to the home in terms of adding greenery and houseplants. Not only do plants add to the overall aesthetic and brighten up a drab space, but they can also improve air quality, boost circulation and help remove airborne toxins, pollen and mould. Spider plants, cacti, ferns, aloe vera and cheese plants are all easy to care for, but you can always choose faux plants and avoid watering altogether.

“Increasingly, people are looking for handcrafted designs and opting for traditional and organic materials wherever possible. Wood, glass, brick and stone, along with rattan and wicker, are the home décor materials of choice, for both durability and natural aesthetic. Drawing on the raw beauty of imper fect finishes, this trend is about making

natural materials look effortlessly stylish. Tr y adding woven baskets, a rattan chair or unvarnished natural wooden crates or shelves for a very Scandi look.”

“Sustainability and eco-friendly products are particularly popular with this trend; the most beneficial materials for the environment predominate, such as bamboo, wicker and cotton”, says Antonia Wheeler, Design Director at Arighi Bianchi. “Scandi style has an update with hints of pattern and texture with shades of beige, soft rich fabrics such as wool, mohair, sheepskin throws and a pop of natural green. Products derived from plants and natural sources such as jute rugs or natural bamboo and eucalyptus furnishings are per fect additions to a natural and sustainable home. Soft furnishings and throws created using ethically sourced wool are another great touch for adding comfort with a conscience.”

Choose leafy, nature-inspired designs to bring the outdoors in. Alex Whitecroft, Head of Design for IWANTWALLPAPER. CO.UK says, “Wallpaper is a fantastic way to introduce nature into the home. Our range of forest wallpapers will allow homeowners to walk in the woods all year round – or be more adventurous with brighter jungle and tropical designs. It’s all about finding the natureinspired look that best suits your needs.”
