I cried over something this week which was so stupid it beggars belief but I’m going to share it with you. It wasn’t a soppy film, I hadn’t stubbed my toe, nothing unkind had been said. No, I was in my storage unit and it was over a dinner service – told you, didn’t I? I come from Stoke on Trent, so by osmosis I know a thing or two about pottery and I’m an emotional person, but this was bizarre!

I’d been rummaging around in my storage unit and pulled out what I refer to as my posh dinner service. It’s a beauty, made by Spode and lovingly collected over the years. It’s a joy to set a table with and to eat off, but for six years now it’s been languishing in boxes never seeing the light of day. Why? Because my life has changed and I didn’t have the occasion to use it. So as I was picking through the packing paper, not only plates, but ghosts were flying out!

Keeping things for best because we don’t want precious items ruined is not unusual but my life doesn’t involve small children, boisterous teenagers, I’m not a Greek wedding venue or clumsy. So how did I fix this wobble? I bundled the lot in the car and started using it! After all, what calibre of guest or occasion was I waiting for?

While we’re in this groove, can I turn your mind to clothes? Having vacuum packed my bulky winter clothes and pulled out my summer wardrobe in May, I realised this week that with no holiday on the horizon and nowhere to go, I’m in danger of putting them all away in September hardly worn.

So I’m taking inspiration from my mum. I have never seen Jean in jeans, leggings or anything with a logo on it. Every day, visitors or not, she dresses up, does her hair and puts on her lipstick.

The thought of popping to the shops in pyjama bottoms for a bottle of milk (OK, I’ve done it!) is to her like putting a sugar bag on the table, receiving a gift and not sending a thank you letter or saying to Dad, “Don’t worry Brian I’ll put the bins out!”

So I’m taking a leaf out of her book. Tonight, we are eating off my “posh” dinner service and I’m dressing up. At times like these every day is a gift, and the least we can do is spoil ourselves with our own treasured things.

Have a good week and, whatever you do, do it in lip gloss.

Love, Anthea X
