Create a Mediterranean holiday feeling

-

Travel may not be on the agenda this summer, but why not bring that Mediterranean spirit into our homes? Claire Hornby, Head of Creative at Barker and Stonehouse says, “Blue and white are key colours when it comes to recreating this look and will conjure memories of azure seas and white-washed villas. Combine these hues with a third bold colour such as yellow to add warmth. Pattern is also a key part of any Mediterranean-inspired scheme; incorporate the region’s distinctive repeating motifs using eye-catching tiles or printedd fabrics. Display holiday treasures for authenticity – and the memories will bring you joy!”

“Mediterranean design strikes a balance between effortlessness, elegance and cosiness for truly pared-back and inviting décor,” adds Suzy McMahon, Sofology Buying Director. “In seating, understated, lightweight fabrics paired with elements of warm wood epitomise this look. Opting for neutral upholstery helps open the space and creates a base to warm up with accessories and soft

furnishings. Keep accessories contemporary with clean lines and shades of blue, terracotta and red. Alternatively, mix a sofa in a softer shade with an accent armchair in a bolder blue, creating a design statement without overshadowing the simplicity of Mediterranean style.”

Tiled or wooden floors are authentic. “Hard flooring is a must to recreate this style, whether that be a wood, tile or stone effect”, says Carpetright Buyer David Snazel. “A large yet understated rug adds warmth, comfort and colour. Colour-wise, consider mixing neutrals with blues, teals and terracotta. Matching the floors, ceiling and walls in neutral white, ivory or taupe will create a cohesive, light, spacious feel common in Mediterranean homes.

Katy Harris of Tile Giant adds, “Typical mosaics and patterns of the region add magic and glamour. Try a bold, patterned floor to complement a modern, bohemian style, or for a more subtle look, opt for a splashback, bringing a hint of the Med to your kitchen or bathroom.”

The key to this look is simplicity. Mediterranean homes are stylish without being fussy, according to Dulux Creative Director Marianne Shillingford. “Consider everything you have in the space; it should be useful to you or pleasing to look at – or both.”

Mediterranean homes often have small windows and dark interiors that keep cool in summer and cosy in winter, so for a small living room you might prefer those deeper shades of golden ochre and terracotta,” says Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director of Dulux
