SUE’S GUIDE TO How I Saved £165 In Five Minutes!

-

Here’s why it pays to haggle. Five minutes on the phone with the AA and I’ve just slashed my breakdown bill by nearly 50%, saving a whopping £165!

It really was super-easy, and even I was amazed how quickly the price came down. So here’s how I did it, and I hope you can save some cash this way too.

So this month our AA breakdown cover was up for renewal. Last year we paid £229; the price on its website for family cover. This covered the three of us for any vehicle and we packed in Home Start, Relay and Onward Travel, so pretty much the all-singing, alldancing package.

This year my renewal quote was a whopping £404! I checked the AA website and this time round it was offering the same family cover for £239 – £165 less than my quote.

Now, yes, I could have ignored their renewal offer, jumped online and bagged the cheaper £239 price, but I wanted to see how low they’d go with a haggle.

I rang up, pressed the “thinking of leaving us” option and told them I loved the ser vice; just not the price. The chap on the phone said he’d see what he could do and within minutes, I was offered the £239 price – matching the website deal, which they claim is only for new customers.

So I saved £165 just by asking. Great news for my pocket, but makes me both mad and sad to think of loyal members paying up each year when there are big savings to be made just by asking.

◆ Renewal quote too high? Call up and press the “thinking of leaving us” option.

◆ This is a fast track to the people with the power to give big discounts.

◆ Shop around and check the website for current deals so you know the best price.

◆ Never set up insurance cover on autorenewal or you can get caught out.
