At the time of writing, it’s hard to know how Christmas 2020 will look, but planning ahead can reduce stress, especially if you’re expecting visitors. Some retailers suggest doing online Christmas shopping early, because websites and couriers are operating close to capacity and the Christmas rush will push delivery companies to their limits.

Get well organised. Shop in good time so you don’t need to grab last-minute gifts on Christmas Eve. You’ll feel calm and prepared, not stressed and anxious about whether your Christmas deliveries will arrive on time.

When I was growing up, Christmas became unduly stressful because Dad would get angry about the state of the house on the morning we were expecting visitors. It wasn’t that untidy, but he’d get fussy and pedantic. Don’t be a Grinch. If you’re expecting visitors, plan for their arrival a few days early. Tidy up, think about entertainm­ent and plan your meals. Consider how social distancing will work. High emotions on the day of a get-together with friends or family can cast a shadow over the experience, so think ahead and prepare. Don’t be stressed on the day because you’re trying to do everything at once and all by yourself!

Games and mental challenges can usually help to keep things light hearted. Going for a walk and pointing out your town’s local history and highlights is another positive way to keep the conversati­on upbeat.
