Simple Ways To Save On Fuel Bills

SUE’S GUIDE TO

-

Big queues at petrol stations and rocketing pump prices gave us all a shock during the fuel crisis which seemed to reach flash point last month. Filling up is something we tend to take for granted, so here’s how to squeeze the most from ever y tank...

Steer clear of traffic jams

OK, easier said than done, but if you avoid driving during rush hour, when you’re more likely to be nose to tail, you can save fuel as constantly pulling away in first gear puts more pressure on your car which in turn uses more fuel.

Clean out your car

If your boot’s stuf fed fit to burst, it’s like driving around carr ying several heavy suitcases, which once again, means your car’s got to work harder. Dejunk the boot and take off the roof rack.

Be a smooth driver

50mph is the “per fect” speed according to motoring exper ts and saves fuel compared with shor t sharp bursts of power as you over take or speed up only to slam on your brakes.

Pump up tyres

Under inflated tyres put more pressure on your car according to the RAC who say a dif ference of 15psi (you won’t notice by looking), wastes 26 miles on a 60 litre tank. Top up tyres to save £65 a year.

Running dry?

It’s bad for your tank and can cause more damage and bills in the long run.

SUE’S TIPS:

◆ Earn points at the pump and save on fuel with loyalty cards like Shell Go+ and BPme. ◆ Don’t run dry! One in ten breakdown policies won’t cover you if you run out of fuel according to financial information company Defaqto.

◆ Save £225 a year by finding the cheapest fuel in your area at WWW.PETROLPRICES.COM (based on average prices and driving habits).
