World’s first Platinum-Gold one-eighth sovereign coin announced for this year’s Platinum Jubilee.

-

Many events are labelled ‘historic’: some happen once a decade, others maybe once a lifetime, others still once a century. You and I though, are about to witness an event that has never happened before, in the entirety of British history. This year, in 2022, Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first British monarch ever to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. Platinum Jubilee - that’s a reign of 70 years - and what a reign it has been. Not only is she the first to reach this milestone, making her our longest reigning monarch, but she is also our oldest reigning monarch. She has reigned through the Jet Age, the Space Age, the Computer Age and now into the Internet Age, and through all that time she has managed her role as monarch and mother with style, grace and compassion. An event of this significance justifies commemorative coins that are quite a bit more special than ‘the usual’ - and that is what we have. Some new sovereign coins have been produced that are world firsts of the same order as the event they celebrate.

WORLD’S FIRST IN PLATINUM-GOLD

The new one-eighth sovereign for the Platinum Jubilee is the world’s first coin of its kind ever minted from ‘platinumgold’ which has been used in recognition of the Platinum Jubilee. It has been created by enriching solid 22 carat gold with 2 caratsworth of platinum. Traditionally, British sovereigns are minted at 22 carat gold purity – which is 91.67% gold - and the remaining 8.33% is customarily copper which is added to the coin to give it added durability. Copper is almost always used, although on one rare occasion for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887 silver was also included. However, to create coins that are incredibly special, this series of sovereigns for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee have been created with the addition of pure platinum to the gold! This means the solid 22 carat gold is being enriched with 2 carats worth of platinum. Each and every coin is made of 91.67% gold plus 8.33% platinum - the richest, most valuable 22 carat gold alloy ever used to mint sovereigns! In the same way this is the first Platinum Jubilee in history, so too are these the first platinum-gold sovereign coins in history.

FEWER THAN 1 IN 4,000 UK HOUSEHOLDS CAN OWN ONE

This new coin is certain to be highly sought-after by collectors - however, many will potentially miss out as the release is subject to a strict limit. Authorised by Tristan da Cunha and approved by both the Foreign, Commonwealth This new gold one-eighth sovereign coin has been minted for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. It has been struck from Platinum-Gold - the usual 22 carat gold sovereigns are customarily minted from, with the addition of platinum (in place of the usual copper). This valuable alloy has never before been used for the minting of sovereigns. Only 5,999 of the one-eight sovereign has been produced.
