SUE’S GUIDE TO Saving On Fixing Niggling Jobs

-

How long is your “to do” list of jobs that need fixing at home? Three in four of us have a niggling repair waiting to be fixed and not getting those jobs done in time leaves us around £1,876 out of pocket, according to research from the Gas Safe Register.

The most expensive niggles include leaky pipes, noisy boilers and rotting wooden decking, which can all cost more to fix if left, and in some cases be dangerous if problems worsen.

Tackling easy DIY tasks can save you cash, but with some jobs, you’ll need to call in the professionals, especially boiler issues and electrical problems.

Here’s how to make sure you get the job done properly and without being ripped off!

Always try and go with recommendations when finding tradespeople. If you can’t, try Which? Trusted Traders, an endorsement scheme for local firms. It covers most trades from bathroom and kitchen fitters to builders, electricians and plumbers and shows customer reviews. TRUSTEDTRADERS.WHICH.CO.UK

When comparing prices for a job, I’d suggest getting at least three quotes in writing from different companies. Be clear about what you want done (to avoid any confusion), and check if the quote includes VAT. Some smaller traders may not be liable for VAT which means they shouldn’t be charging it.

Find a Gas Safe registered engineer at GASSAFEREGISTER.CO.UK or call 0800 408 5500. For electricians try ELECTRICALSAFETYFIRST.ORG.UK

SUE’S TIPS:

◆ Check a trader’s credentials and if they claim to belong to a trade organisation, double check if they’re a current member. ◆ Check payment terms. You should usually be asked to pay when the job’s done. If it’s cash upfront, just say no!

◆ Home insurance won’t pay out on damage if you fail to fix problems or allow your home to fall into a state of disrepair – another reason to tackle jobs now.
