FRESHEN UP YOUR FURNITURE

-

Living room furniture seen better days? The sky’s the limit when it comes to the cost of new storage units to house your TV etc, but before you splash out, consider second hand or revamping your existing furniture with paint.

“It’s a great budget way to freshen up your décor,” says Becci Coombes of Hyggestyle.

“I would always suggest picking a piece you actually need, rather than just buying something that’s cheap, as it’s all too easy to clutter up your home.

“Always try to plump for solid wood furniture (dovetail drawer joints are a sign it is well made) and check carefully for insects, woodworm or damp. If you’re worried about odours, a dish of bicarb left in old drawers or wardrobes will also help to remove smells (and adding a couple of drops of lavender to the dish will scent your clothes beautifully).

“I am a huge fan of Rust-Oleum chalk paint as it needs little preparation. Be bold and pick an accent colour that’s already in your room – maybe a shade of green from a cushion or an accent on a lampshade – and try it elsewhere.

“Updating tired brass drawer knobs for ceramic ones only costs a few pounds but can completely change the look of a piece. Just make sure you remove the old ones before you start painting in case they are a different size!”
