Recovery Universal Basic Income would help UK

-

OVER 25,000 people have now signed a cross-party joint statement from the Compass political campaign network, calling for a Recovery Universal Basic Income, joining 124 MPs and Peers in supporting the proposal from seven parties across all four nations of the UK.

As we continue to battle the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s vital to renew the economy over the coming months. As we head into autumn and winter, many people will no longer have access to the furlough scheme and may face the prospect of losing their jobs.

The ongoing Brexit negotiations are scheduled to end over the coming months, with no guarantee as to what the outcome will be or impact this will have on our future trading relationships.

It’s vital to renew the economy over the coming months and a basic income would get cash into people’s hands to spend in their local economies, whilst at the same time offering people financial security at a time of such uncertainty.

The Government could immediately begin plans for a Recovery Universal Basic Income.

It would be simple to set up from an administrative and cost perspective, provide comprehensive coverage of the population, and dramatically reduce poverty and unemployment.

It would support the transitioning of our society and economy from crisis to recovery. And who knows, it could even be the start of a foundation from which we can build back better?

It’s the time for the Government to embrace this vision and be bold. JUSTIN PEMBERTON
