Response group eases operations as volunteers return to work
VOLUNTEER Chieveley – an informal organisation at the heart of the village’s coronavirus response – has praised the dedication of its members through the pandemic. The message of goodwill came as the group begins to ease down its operations, with many active volunteers due to return to work, meaning that they will have less free time to help elderly and vulnerable villagers.
Volunteer Chieveley was launched in March by Sarah Hutchison, Nicky Ager and Helen Singleton. Its members take pride in the aid they have offered to many villagers in their hour of need over the past four months.
The group has run 580 errands and supplied 132 food parcels. In addition, it has responded to a number of requests for financial assistance.
Much of its recent work has involved preparing Chieveley for the relaxing of lockdown restrictions.
In a statement, the organisers emphasised that vulnerable residents should continue to reach out.
They said: “As we now gradually negotiate our way through the easing of some restrictions, many will be returning to work, meaning some volunteers who have been supporting neighbours are unable to dedicate quite as much time as they would like.
“We are quite sure you will join us in celebrating and thanking all our incredible volunteers for their amazing support, kindness and generosity during this unprecedented time, not forgetting the 19 coordinators keeping everything in check.
“It has been tough, but we will beat this, sunshine always follows rain. “In the meantime, please all keep safe, protect yourselves and others around you, but most of all, know you are not alone.”
