Super senior Tony takes West Berks title

TONY Athawes is the 2020 senior champion at West Berks thanks to a fine fiveover-par round of 78 on Sunday.

The 10-handicappe­r scored 11 pars and two birdies to record the best nett and gross scores of the day – gross 78, nett 68 – to win the title for the first time.

Simon Matton took second with 81, while Kevin Howe was a shot further back in third.

Gale McAuley won the third and final round of the ladies’ Gillas Cup with 34 points.

Jane Brackenbur­y was second with 32 and Sian Soanes third on 29.

The overall title is won by the competitor with the highest aggregate of their best score in rounds one and two added to their score in the final.

McAuley’s score in the final was enough to land the trophy with a total of 70 points, while Tina Mulford with 62 took second and Georgie Seaman with 61 beat Pat Treacy on countback to take third.

Chris Ward won Division 1 of the men’s October medal with a gross 79, nett 70, while Ben Reffin was second with 85, 73, and Mark Charlton with 84, 74, beat Andrew Morton on countback to take third place.

Gary Abraham shot gross 79, nett 66 to score the best nett score of the day and win Division 2, while Lee Stocker was second on 85, 71, and Chris Prior third with 87, 72.

Paul Beake won Division 3 with gross 92, net 72 while Jason Read with 103, 74, was second and John Carroll with 99, 77, third, beating Mustapha Mzouri on countback.

Kevin Dixon won the men’s midweek stableford by a distance with 38 points.

He was seven clear of Mark Smith, while Rod Maloney on 27 beat Alexander Anderson on countback to take third spot.

Darren Morton scored 39 points to win the men’s Saturday stableford.

A three-way tie for second place on 38 points was resolved in the order of Aaron Rid, Chris Brind and Liam McCullough on countback.

The men’s seniors retained the Chris Green Trophy that is contested annually between teams representi­ng the men’s seniors and the ladies.

IAN Martin lifted the Captain’s Rosewbowl at Donnington Grove on Saturday.

Martin scored 43 points to clinch victory on countback from Damian Carville.

Shey Walder headed the women’s competitio­n with total of 34 points, edging out Lorraine Storey and Toni Prince by a point.

A full field of 115 competitor­s took part in the event.
