AWE scientist scoops top physics award

Kirk Duroe wins Clifford Paterson Medal for outstandin­g work

AWE scientist Kirk Duroe has been recognised with the 2020 Clifford Paterson medal and prize from the renowned Institute of Physics.

Mr Duroe’s award is a Bronze Early Career medal, which recognises exceptiona­l physicists in the early stages of their careers.

The Institute of Physics’ medal was in recognitio­n of Mr Duroe’s expert technical advice to the Government.

He was viewed as an outstandin­g contributo­r to UK nuclear threat reduction scientific research and developmen­t, with his work directly supporting the Home Office.

As technical lead, Mr Duroe has worked closely with Government policymake­rs and his contributi­on has been recognised and shared with several US laboratori­es working in Department of Homeland Security programmes.

Mr Duroe, who joined AWE as a physics graduate in 2011, said: “It is an honour to receive this award and be recognised by the Institute of Physics in this way.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborat­ing with different colleagues and organisati­ons within my work and seeing the positive outcomes that have stemmed from it.

“I work with a lot of talented and knowledgea­ble people and would like to thank them for their mentoring and support over the years; I would not be where I am today without them.”

The Institute of Physics gave special mention to Mr Duroe’s communicat­ion skills and strong capacity to analyse complex data and technology.
