Pupils mark Holocaust Memorial Day

-

PUPILS at Park House School marked this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day by lighting candles in their windows at home.

Headteacher Tom Goodenough said taking part in the day was an important way for young people to ensure the past is not forgotten.

The school held a special assembly last Wednesday, January 27, with pupils then discussing the themes around the event within their tutor group sessions.

Head of history Emily Davis said she was impressed by the respectful discussion which the day instigated among pupils.

“There were a number of thoughtful and respectful discussions and photos that were shared with us from our brilliant students for Holocaust Memorial Day last week,” she added.

“The maturity of how they

were able to process, recognise and develop their knowledge on the importance of remembering this harrowing event was outstanding.”

Pupils were encouraged to participate in the national ‘Light in the Darkness’ event, in which households up and down the country lit candles in their windows at 8pm on Holocaust Memorial Day to remember those who died and to “stand against prejudice and hatred today”.

Mr Goodenough said: “It was inspiring to see how well Park House students embraced this year’s theme for Holocaust Memorial Day.

“The call to ‘be the light in the darkness’ resonates with young people in these troubled times and serves as a powerful message on the importance of trying to embody the best qualities of humanity.

“In this way, Park House students and young people the world over can ensure that the past is not forgotten, but also that the future can be a lot brighter if they stand in solidarity behind the human values that matter.”

Photographs will be placed in a display of the school’s participation in the event.
