Yoga from home proves a huge success

-

A YOGA teacher from Tadley has helped hundreds of people become more flexible after launching an app enabling students to practice at home.

Felicity Wood launched an on demand ‘Netflix for yoga’-style app during lockdown, and has since had more than 150 students sign up, collectively doing more than 1,300 hours of yoga.

Ms Wood, who has been teaching yoga for more than seven years, said she wanted to set up the app to help her clients keep yoga a part of daily life even during lockdown.

She said: “There has been a boom in home yoga during the pandemic.

“It has given people routine, a way to move their bodies, alleviate stress and anxiety, and an opportunity to do something for themselves.

“The app combines what a lot of people love about a real-life class with other benefits too.

“Even outside of a pandemic, many people can’t get to physical classes, so the app gives them a chance to make yoga a part of everyday life.

“Yoga works best when you practice more – one class a week is great, but consistency is key.

“I wanted to create a platform that meant people could easily make time for yoga, and fit in regular breaks throughout the week.”

Classes on the app – called Felicity Wood Yoga – are from five to 70 minutes long and cover a range of yoga styles including gentle yoga, runners, hatha, vinyasa flow, restorative, pregnancy, postnatal, guided meditations and relaxation exercises.

Ms Wood said her mission is to make yoga more accessible and easier to make a part of everyday life.

She said: “My mission is to make yoga feel less intimidating and more available to people who perhaps don’t see themselves as someone who does yoga.

“People are put off because of how yoga is portrayed and my intention has always been to make yoga accessible to everyone regardless of whether or not they can touch their toes.”

With lockdown beginning to ease, Ms Wood plans to continue teaching via the app, with new content and group challenges to keep people motivated.

She predicts that while some people will be keen to get back to face-to-face classes, others will want to enjoy the flexibility of doing yoga at home.

She added: “I think the future of yoga is going to be like the future of work after the pandemic – a mix of remote and in-person experiences.

“Technology doesn’t go backwards and we can use it to our advantage while still being mindful of the benefits of real life connection.

“The app is fostering an amazing community online, allowing people to get the benefits of yoga in a way that works for them.”
