Edgar joins achievers
FENCING starlet Edgar Hornby is lining up as a member of the England ‘Tomorrow’s Achievers’ squad to fence in Poland this week.
The 14-year old from Pamber Heath, a pupil at Basingstoke’s Bishop Challoner School, is in a 24-strong team of 13- and 14-year-olds and is currently ranked at the top of his age group.
He is representing England in the International Challenge Wratislava tournament in which leading fencers from 15 countries are taking part. Coach Herman du Preez said: “Edgar has been an exceptional student who has made enormous progress in the sport in a very short time.
“Edgar commits himself fully to achieving demanding and selfimposed fencing goals, and his wholehearted approach has paid off with outstanding results in regional, national and international fencing competitions.”
Edgar has made great strides over the past two years, working his way up from scratch to win a medal in the British Youth Championship against the best fencers in the UK.
He has also competed as part of the British Cadet Development squad in Slovakia, and is now joining the England squad in Poland.
He was recently awarded a scholarship by the Basingstoke and District Council and Sports Trust to help with the cost of travel and training and he has set his eyes on a future Olympics squad.
Martyn makes record claim
BANJO Cycles’ Martyn Harris won Newbury Road Club’s Ashford Hill 10-mile time trial, the second round of the SPOCO competition.
He recorded a quick time of 23 minutes 24 seconds over the hilly terrain, an unofficial course record and nearly 40 seconds ahead of the next finisher, Tristan Devanne of the host club.
Ian Greenstreet was third, but leads the SPOCO series with 35 points, 10 clear of Donal Linehan.
Devanne was also in good form when finishing third in the Hainault Hilly 50K in Essex in a time of 1 hour 16 mins 16 secs, also winning the two-up competition in the Lea Valley 25 alongside Dean Lubin in a time of 55.38.
Banjo Cycles’ Stuart Thompson claimed a top-10 finish in the Omega Portsmouth Circuits Race at the Mountbatten Centre to add six points to his licence.
Banjo’s Paul Lloyd produced an impressive race to finish second in the fourth round of the Garrick Spring Series at Surrey’s Porridge Pot Hill.
Lindsay off the mark
KINTBURY-based international dressage rider Lindsay Jenkins claimed her first win of the year with her promising young Grand Prix horse Senorita II at Oldencraig Equestrian Centre in Surrey.
Her win followed a third-place finish at the season’s opening Premier League show in Myerscough, Lancashire, the previous week. In both competitions, the pair had a number of well-established horses behind them and the results mark a step forward in their continued progress towards challenging for a Nations Cup team place.
